We evaluated the therapeutic role of digital storytelling for adolescents with HIV. Abstract The global commitment to universal access for people in need of antiretroviral therapy has transformed the lives of adolescents with HIV. In contrast, there has been limited commitment at policy or service level to the need for effective therapeutic interventions which can help them to cope with their life experiences. It is imperative that the scale up of antiretroviral therapy programmes is accompanied by evidence-based therapeutic approaches if we are to assist adolescents to make informed treatment and secondary prevention decisions and to enjoy happy, fulfilled lives. This pilot study sought to evaluate the digital storytelling process as a therapeutic intervention for 12 HIV positive adolescents and young people within Africaid’s Zvandiri programme in Harare, Zimbabwe. Drawing on narrative therapy, each storyteller created a digital film in which they narrated their life experiences and dominant themes in their lives. Storytellers found the process therapeutic as it helped them to move away from the negative themes which dominated their lives to a newer, richer perspective of their lives in which they had overcome challenges. Their films have provided caregivers and programmers with new insights into the challenges they faced and appropriate interventions for other adolescents living with HIV. Previous article in issue.

Many species are infected by lentiviruses, which are characteristically responsible for long-duration illnesses with a long incubation period. Upon entry into the target cell, the viral RNA genome is converted reverse transcribed into double-stranded DNA by a virally encoded enzyme, reverse transcriptase , that is transported along with the viral genome in the virus particle. The resulting viral DNA is then imported into the cell nucleus and integrated into the cellular DNA by a virally encoded enzyme, integrase , and host co-factors.

Not only must we face the same plights and perils of the hetero single soldiers, but we must also face the cold reality of a much smaller dating pool, our exes dating other exes and an unrealistic image of what it is to be shirtless. So we try to arm ourselves as best we can, because no matter how many broken hearts we bury, the battle for love must go on. But there is one surefire way of turning every future love scenario into a bloodbath, no matter how much of a match the two of you may be, and that is being HIV-positive and desperate for a date.
It is one thing to admit that you are open to finding love. It is quite another to constantly be wondering why you don’t have a boyfriend. Before you can find the right man to bake cookies with and watch romantic comedies on a rainy Sunday afternoon, it takes realizing that you are better off alone than trapped in a relationship with Mr. Of course, gays who are too eager for love come in the form of both statuses, but an HIV-positive man is a particular breed of desperate.
These guys will often approach a first date with the hope that their potential match will be able to overlook their positive status and give them a chance in spite of it all. Once they do, it is as if their date has done something for them and they instantly move up one, maybe two stages, on the clinger scale.

Reference South African researchers presenting a study at the recent Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections CROI have suggested that the reason the extremely high rates of HIV infection in women are stubbornly refusing to decline is, seemingly unfairly, because women are more likely to be diagnosed and take antiretroviral therapy than men. The uptake of circumcision may also be contributing to an observed fall in HIV incidence in men. Alain Vandormael of the University of KwaZulu-Natal said that getting more, and younger, men on to HIV treatment was essential in order to reduce the persistently high HIV incidence in young women, especially if combined with prevention measures that offer women the same degree of protection as medical male circumcision does to men.
It was this cohort that in provided the first evidence from a low-income setting that getting a sufficiently high proportion of the population virally suppressed was starting to bring down the HIV infection rate. In the AHRI cohort, people are proactively tested by community health workers, who visit each household in the catchment area, using dried blood spot technology, once a year.
However, if a person is diagnosed as HIV positive, it complicates matters further. A person with HIV must be completely honest about the issue while dating online, but it can be rather difficult to talk about it to others on a regular dating site. Today, it has been estimated that there are more than 34 million people all over the world living with HIV. With improved treatments, they are living longer and enjoying a better quality of life.

The ratio is disproportionately higher for Black and Latina women, however, compared to women of other races or ethnic groups.

Why are the numbers so high? Lack of Awareness, and Distrust and Fear Many black people may be HIV-positive and not know it, so they continue to spread the virus while also getting sicker. Part of the problem may be a lingering distrust in the black community of government sources of information and research.
